ESAN NEEDS A SEPARATE STATE TO MAXIMIZE HER POTENTIALS – Kingsley Ohens
Esan needs a separate state to maximize her potentials – Kingsley Ohens
Opoji 2nd June 2021
An Esan Community Youth Leader, Comrade Kingsley Ohens has called for the creation of a separate state for Esan people of Nigeria, politically refered to as Edo Central Senatorial District.
Comrade Ohens made this call in Opoji during a media parley with pressmen. According to him, “it is now clear that the Esan Nation comprising of 5 Local Government Area Councils, will only achieve her full potentials under a separate State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Though, calls likes this were made in the past, however, this time, its an idea whose time has come following the constitutional changes currently being debated in the country”, he opined.
In his words, “Esanland is big and developed enough to be a separate state when compared to states like Balyesa and Ekiti states who has almost the same land mass with Esanland”.
“A situation whereby we are not adequately represented in the power structure and government composition in Edo State calls for action of this nature. Currently Esan people of Nigeria are sidelined in the power structure and we seemed not to be able to maximize our potentials under this arrangement. I am therefore of the opinion that we ask with appropriate intensity for the creation of a separate state for Esan people where we can have a say in the government composition and therefore able to fast track our development”, he added.
Esanland is home to great Nationalist, national leaders and heroes. Some are dead while some are still living. Starting from the very foundation of Nigeria, an Esan Man Chief Anthony Enahoro was very active in nation building and was able to moved the motion for Nigeria’s independence – the reason why Edo State House of Assembly was named after him. Others are Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, Former vice president of Nigeria. Prof Ambrose Alli of Blessed memory who transformed Old Bendel during his one tenure as governor of Bendel State. And many other Esan heroes too numerous to mention.
How come this vibrant and highly educated region is now completely sidelined from the power game in Edo state where we are suppose to be a major stakeholder. It’s now evident that we may not be able to achieve the Esan of our dream under this arrangement and therefore I Comrade Kingsley Ohens join other concerned Esan sons and daughters to call for the creation of a separate state for us now that state creation is part of the national discourse under the ongoing debate on constitutional amendment.
We are therefore putting ideas in papers and modalities in place to pursue this historic feat to conclusion. The Bible said, we should ask and it shall be given, we should seek and we shall find and when we knock, it shall be opened unto us”, Ohens stressed biblically.
